4) Attach the measuring tape to your main halyard and hoist the tape all the way to the top of your mast.  Record the measurement between this position, and the bearing surface of your tack shackle.  This is your absolute maximum luff length.

5) From our selection of sails, choose a luff length which is shorter than your maximum luff length by at least 1%.  Record the luff length you select, and compare to your max luff dimension for accuracy.

6) Lower your main halyard until the dimension you selected in step 5 is even with your tack shackle, and cleat the main halyard in its normal position.

7) At this point, you have determined the appropriate luff and foot length, and need to make sure that the boom will clear any dodger, bimini, or boom gallows on your boat.  From our selection of sails, determine the leech length that corresponds to the luff and foot length of the sail you have selected.  With the measuring tape still hoisted to the luff dimension of your new main, determine your boom   position by matching the leech length of your new main, to the mark you made for your foot length in step 3.  With the boom set in this position, check to ensure that there is adequate clearance under the boom.  Remember, the sail will stretch a bit when in use.

8) Select the appropriate luff slides from our selection page.

9) Repeat this entire process to ensure accuracy.

10) Place an order for your new PC main.  Remember to order the appropriate luff slides, they are included in the price of the main.
