Modern, "exotic" lines offer incredible improvements in holding power and weight savings. But they also require somewhat different handling. For example, simply tying a knot will cut the breaking strength of a line in half. A splice, on the other hand, will retain 90% of the breaking strength! Terminating halyards, sheets, and control lines properly will increase performance and extend the life of the line.
